Microelectrodes for neuroelectronics and for synaptic current monitoring
a) Planar microelectrodes for neural excitation and response measurement. Planar microelectrodes (Al/Cr/Au) on glass were fabricated for cyatic nerve excitation and response measurement. This work, done in collaboration with Prof. Vasco Galhardo at IBMC/U.Porto will replace bulk electrodes used in present experiments. The fabricated chip has deep channels ( 400um deep, 200um wide) fabricated on glass, where the nerve bundles are placed. The microelectrodes are placed with the deep channels and allow spatial resolution down the channel. Typical nerve impedance is several MOhms. b) MR set up for synaptic current measurement In collaboration with Prof. Ana Sebastiao of IMM/FMUL, an integrated MR set up is being built aimed at detecting synaptic currents in mouse cortex slices. These measurements are regularly done using the patch clamp potenciometric method. In the present experiment, the chip will be placed under the cortex slice. The chip consits of Wheastone bridges with MTJ sensors, two in a flux guide structure, two shielded.
